Ernest "Fritz" Hollings

Ernest "Fritz" Hollings represented South Carolina as a Democratic senator from 1966 to 2005 and ran for president in 1984. Prior to that he was a South Carolina legislator (1949-54), Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina (1955-59), and Governor of South Carolina (1959-63). In the Senate, he authored the Coastal Zone Management Act (1972), the Ocean Dumping Act (1972), and the Automobile Fuel Economy Act (1975). He was co-author of the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Deficit Reduction Act (1985). He is the author of "The Case Against Hunger: A Demand for a National Policy" published in 1970.
