About the Program
Television executive Don Hewitt was a guest on Booknotes in 2001 to discuss his memoir, "Tell Me a Story: 50 Years and 60 Minutes in Television." In the book, Mr. Hewitt recounted his participation in the early days of television broadcasting at CBS. He was responsible for the first broadcasts of political conventions in 1948; the first Kennedy-Nixon debate in 1960; and for the program 60 Minutes, in which he created and executive produced.
Don Hewitt
Don Hewitt was the creator and former executive producer of CBS' 60 Minutes. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including eight Emmys, the Peabody Award in 1989, the Broadcaster of the Year award in 1980, and the International Radio and TV Society gold medal in 1988. Don Hewitt passed away on August 19, 2009 at the age of 86.
