About the Program
Nell Irvin Painter is the author of six books, including "Creating Black Americans: African-American History and Its Meanings, 1618 to the Present" and "Sojourner Truth, A Life, A Symbol." She was an American history professor at Princeton for sixteen years before retiring in 2005. From 1997 to 2000, Ms. Painter was head of the university's Program in African American Studies.
